In 1252, the French King, Saint Louis, limited prostitution to specific areas.  For instance, in Paris, all brothels had to be within 300 meters of a church.  Thus clients could purify themselves after their indulgence. 

Some of the Parisian streets that housed such establishments had rather telling names: Whore's Pouch, Break-a-loaf, and Love-shafts.
